Surface Mount Technology:
High reliability surface mount technology (SMT) manufacturing has been added as the newest course offered by the NASA Training Center, Eastern Region. This course trains personnel how to fabricate or inspect spaceflight hardware incorporating SMT devices in accordance with NASA Handbook NHB 5300.4(3M), Workmanship Requirements for Surface Mount Technology, which is expected to be released this Fall. Videotapes, illustrations, a student workbook, and demonstrations of techniques are used to convey the underlying theories, approved materials and tools, and step-by-step procedures necessary to assemble printed wiring assemblies (PWA) representative of this technology. Designed as a hands-on course, each student will be required to process their own PWA through the entire fabrication process as well as pass a written examination of the process requirements. Current status of training in accordance with the requirements of NHB 5300.4(3A-2), Requirements for Soldered Electrical Connections, is a prerequisite for this course.

NHB Familiarization:
Scheduled to be ready this Fall is a course titled "NHB Familiarization". This 2 or 3 day course will be aimed at project managers, task monitors, design engineers, and other personnel involved with space flight hardware fabrication tasks, but may not actually build the hardware. It will be a limited hands-on course that will touch on the important basics of each of the disciplines involved with flight hardware manufacturing. Students will use hand soldering equipment, wire crimping tools, and various inspection aids resulting in a practical knowledge of how each NASA Handbook contributes to the reliability of space flight hardware.

Information on these courses can be obtained from the Training Center Coordinator, Eastern Region. There are many other courses available from both NASA Training Centers as well. Contact the appropriate Training Center Coordinator for descriptions, availability, and pricing.
