Description:
COTS MEMs Sensors-Accelerometers Quality & Reliability

Abstract:
Several commercial off-the-shelf MEMS packages were tested aboard the NASA’s STS-93 Space Shuttle in collaboration between Aerospace and JSC.  A follow up collaboration between Aerospace/JSC/JPL in FY00 was aimed to better define the cause of anomalies observed during flight testing and to understand their failure mechanisms.  To further define the areas of implementation for NASA’s missions, JSC was tasked to review the current sensing/accelerating macro systems for the Space Shuttle and to determine if COTS MEMS can be used as replacements.  JSC to follow up on this and initiate collaboration with project for initiation of candidate MEMS definition and implementation.
